In January 1996, the famous theatre La Fenice (San Marco 1965, on Campo San Fantin) burned down. With this disaster, Venice lost its most popular venue to watch performing arts like theatre plays, opera, ballet and classic concerts that was beloved by locals and tourist alike since its construction in 1836. After the fire, artists and artisans worked many hours to make sure that the theatre lives up to its name “La Fenice” (the phoenix) and rises from its ashes even more beautiful than before. After the renovation and reconstruction according to original plans was done, the theatre was finally ready for new glory. On 14.12.2003, a concert was the first performance since the fire. Ever since, it is once again the premier spot to watch performing arts like theatre plays, opera, ballet and classic concerts in Venice.
