It would be criminal to visit Barcelona and not go and see the Magic Fountain of Montjuic. This spectacular fountain was designed by Carles Buïgas for the Great Universal Exhibition of 1929. Critics thought the project was far too ambitious and would never be ready in time – even though the plans were submitted a whole 12 months before the exhibition was to commence.
However, 3,000 workers were assigned to the task and less than one year later, Barcelona had its Magic Fountain!
The fountain was heralded as a new art medium because it used light as an integral part of its spectacular beauty, and visitors today are as enthralled as they were in 1929 by the fabulous display of light, water and colour that is accompanied by music each Thursday to Sunday throughout the summer and Friday and Saturday in the winter. The show takes about 15 minutes and runs every 30 minutes – but sunset is the best time to view this magical and amazing display.
